The Island of Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi is situated in the middle of Phang Nga Bay near Phuket. Inhabited mainly by very friendly fisherman, the island is still largely untouched by mass tourism and retains its own culture and tradition. Friendly people and beautiful unspoiled nature are its main attraction. This is the right destination for the travellers who are interested in discovering different cultures and a different way of life.

Koh Yao Noi remains a beautiful island, where most people still believe that the island should be preserved from human degradation. It consists of pristine beaches, knotted forest and unspoilt coastline, and offers a great vantage point for relaxing and absorbing the beautiful scenery in the bay. It is often described as one of the last islands in the region to not be overly developed.

From Koh Yao Noi you can take the boat to visit many of the well known attractions of other islands like Phi-Phi island, James Bond Island, Maya Beach, Riley Beach or Krabi and many others which are all nearby, and Phuket with its shopping centres, bars and night life is just 30 min by boat. Yao Noi is a haven of peace, much more relaxed and quiet than these tourist destinations.

Koh Yao Noi has approximately 18 km of concrete and dirt road around it. The main road is a two-lane concrete road that performs a ring around the entire perimeter of the island (excluding the most Northern parts – there are only dirt roads in this area of the island). There are several interior roads that are a combination of either sand/dirt or concrete.

The most efficient way to get around the island is to hire a scooter. No licence is generally required and helmets are provided. We can arrange motorbike hire for you for the best prices.

Otherwise, tuk-tuks or taxis are available to give you lifts across the island. Simply flag one of these vehicles down as they drive past or tell us and we call them to pick you up at our resort.

Bicycles are also an excellent mode of transport and the main circle road around the island only has one large hill that must be navigated. We can provide you with bicycles or mountain bikes, all in good condition.

There are many restaurants and food stalls on Koh Yao Noi and some more opened just recently, including really good seafood restaurants near the beach. You can eat well and cheaply if you go the original Thai food stalls instead of the restaurants

There are some lively bars, but in general the night life in Koh Yao Noi is quite relaxed. The population of Koh Yao Noi is predominately Muslim, so alcohol is not available everywhere although most resort bars and restaurants will serve it. There is a shop just near the market on Koh Yao Noi, where they have spirits, beers and wine coolers for sale.

Although just a small  island in Phang Nga Bay, Koh Yao Noi has  a hospital, pharmacy, post office, 7/11 supermarket, 2 banks and 24 hour electricity supply. Internet access and mobile telephone connections are available in most restaurants and bars.

What to do on Yao Noi

We offer various tours on land or sea with our own guides or with local people from the island who we’e known for years.

Around Yao Noi are about 400 small islands. We have our own boat for island hopping, fishing tours, sunset cruises, snorkelling, kayaking and even a “Robinson Crusoe Night” on a lonely little island (we provide you with a tent, sleeping bags, barbeque, a cooler box with food and everything you might need to spend 24 hours alone on a island).

You can book diving tours or rent a sea kayak to explore the next island or the caves and shores of Yao Noi. We can arrange boat tours to the world famous places like James Bond island, Phi-Phi island, Maya Bay or Riley Beach, which can all be reached by boat in a short time from Koh Yao.

If you like to explore the jungle, you can book one of our local guides who will go with you into the jungle and show you all the specialities in the rain forest. With different plants, the rain forest is another world from home – and if you are lucky you might even see some wild animals when you’re in the jungle.

You drive with our guide to the other side of the island and from there you go trekking through the rain forest with its abundant flore and fauna, until you reach the “Big Tree” – the biggest tree on Koh Yao island, which takes more than 30 people hand to hand to surround it!  We can pick you up with the boat at Big Tree or you take the walk back again (about 1 hour).

You can rent all kind of bicycles from us, both for every day transport or for real mountain biking. All bikes are in ‘as new’ condition and are serviced after every trip.

Yao Noi has some spectacular climbing spots. We can connect you with local guides and will set up a climbing tour for  you. And don’t be afraid, we have some special locations, so if you do fall it will be into 30º warm water 😉
